Itinerary

Stop At: Augsburg Town Hall, Rathausplatz 2, 86150 Augsburg, Bavaria Germany

In the 15th century the market of the “Lebzelter” (gingerbread makers) organized before Christmas led to a conflict among the participants, so great that a meeting of the city council was held to sort it and avoid any further disagreements, on December 22, 1498. The resulting document is the first written record of a proper Christmas market in this city. Since then Holiday markets flourished, especially after the Reformation and the introduction of new traditions by Martin Luther, like the tradition of the Christkind (Holy Christ Child) giving presents at Christmas, instead of Saint Nicolaus on December the 6th.
This and many more stories about the Christmas pranks of “Lebzeltenstreiche” or the “Krampus” will be well enlightened by your host, while strolling in the city center from the central market at Rathausplatz (City Hall), towards Fuggerplatz, to Moritzplatz and the catholic church of Saint Moritz, and then to Martin-Luther-Platz, where traditions will clearly be more protestant.

During our visit you will also learn about the founding of this roman city, of the protestant reformation movement and the resulting 30 Years War. In addition to navigating, your guide provides anecdotes about top landmarks and historical gems, including Elias Holl, the world’s oldest social housing complex, and locations associated with both Martin Luther and Marie Antoinette.
