What makes Sachsenhausen and Potsdam with Guide and Private Vehicle a unique experience ?
Your driver will pick you up from a pre-arranged location. By definition this will be your hotel, but if you are interested in a different location our driver will adapt. In the vehicle you will have some time to gather your strength before a full day of excitement.
You will then be taken to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. You will be greeted by the chilling metal words “Arbeit Macht Frei”. You will learn about the history of this tragic place. From its creation by the Nazis to its takeover by the Soviets. Inside you will have the opportunity to spend time in the Jewish barracks, kitchen and laundry. You will walk through the Appelplatz, whose despicable atmosphere remains to this day. Your guide will explain the workings of the camp and answer any questions you may have.
Then head to the New Gardens. This vast park is famous for its natural and architectural beauty. In addition to the lush greenery, you will see some architectural gems. Especially the Marble Palace, which is located on the other side of the Heiliger See lake.
You will cross the Glienicke Bridge, better known as the Bridge of Spies thanks to Steven Spielberg. It is an inconspicuous place, but that is exactly what is so striking about it. It was here that the United States and the Soviet Union exchanged captured agents during the Cold War. The atmosphere is said to have remained tense to this day.
You will then travel to the centre of Potsdam. You will have the opportunity to walk under the New Gate. This historic gate is a reminder of the city’s Prussian past. Today it impresses with its baroque style and beautiful workmanship.
We think of the Brandenburg Gate only in relation to Berlin. And while Berlin’s gate is impressive and the most recognisable, few know that the others exist. And you will have the chance to see them. Potsdam’s Brandenburg Gate was built to celebrate the triumphs of Frederick the Great. It is modelled on the architecture of ancient Rome. Feast your eyes and decide for yourself which Brandenburg Gate is your favourite.
From the Brandenburg Gate the tour takes you through the lavish gardens of Sanssouci. They are often regarded as one of the finest examples of Rococo garden design in Europe. You will find that they deserve their fame. You will also have the opportunity to see the Friedenskirche (Church of Peace), the tomb of several Prussian kings and the Gemäldegalerie (Old Master Paintings).
While in the New Gardens, visit the British-inspired Cecilienhof Palace. A place of particular significance in modern history. The famous Potsdam Conference was held here. Three Allied leaders met in the palace: Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union, Winston Churchill of the United Kingdom and Harry S Truman of the United States. Find out about the important decisions taken at the conference and the significance of Cecilienhof Palace.
You will then see the heart and soul of Potsdam. The iconic palace of Frederick the Great – Sanssouci. Built as a place of rest and relaxation for the ruler. Hence the name ‘Sanssouci’, which is French for ‘without cares’. Let yourself be spoiled in this fairytale place.
Beneath the palace is a magnificent multi-level vineyard. As you walk around the palace, you will see the tomb of Frederick the Great and find out why the locals put potatoes on it instead of flowers. You will also visit Ruinenberg and the historic windmill.
Finally, we go to the New Palace. Frederick the Great had a tendency to build palaces for every occasion. This one was built to impress visitors and show the extent of the king’s power. And the impression remains to this day. Admire the rich baroque and rococo decorations.
Finally, you will be transferred in a comfortable vehicle to your hotel or a location of your choice. Perhaps this will be an opportunity to relax and take an evening stroll around Berlin after the drop off? Or perhaps to sort through your photos and share them with friends?
