The tour begins on the magnificent cathedral square where we will see colourful, ornately decorated old houses and the beautiful renaissance well. If we are lucky, we will also experience the traditional farmers’ market which still takes place here every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday (until 14:00) as it has for centuries.

For over a thousand years the mighty St. Martin’s cathedral has towered over the ancient city of Mainz. Here kings have been crowned and the Protestant Reformation was kindled. Discover its many unique features, hear about its dramatic history and meet headless St. Alban in the cloisters.

In one of the world’s oldest museum dedicated to books, printing and writing, you will enter the high-security vault and get a close-up view of the Gutenberg Bible printed around 1450 in Mainz. Understand the impact of this masterpiece by the “Man of the Millennium”. Another highlight is the live printing demonstration; sit down for 15 minutes and see how letters were cast and how pages were printed nearly 600 years ago by Johannes Gutenberg in his local workshop. See beautiful historic printing presses and learn about the many different aspects of the first generation of printed books.
