Stop At: Kelheim, Kelheim, Lower Bavaria, Bavaria

After a one-hour drive through the largest hop-growing area, we reach Kelheim in Lower Bavaria, right at the confluence of the Danube and Altmühl rivers. During a short stroll through the historic old town, you can take a little refreshment at the Schneider Weisse brewery restaurant. Due to the war, the traditional wheat beer brewery was relocated from Munich to the Danube. Through the Danube Gate from the 13th century, we reach the landing stages with a magnificent view of the Liberation Hall.

Stop At: Donaudurchbruch, 93309 Kelheim, Bavaria Germany

With one of the comfortable ships we embark on a 50-minute journey through what is probably the most beautiful river landscape in Germany – the Danube breakthrough in the Weltenburger Enge nature reserve. On the way you will learn interesting and spectacular facts about this unique natural landscape! Fare Kelheim – Weltenburg and back: € 12.50 (reduction for families)

Stop At: Weltenburg Abbey, Asamstraße 32, 93309 Kelheim, Germany

The end of the spectacular cruise is Weltenburg Abbey with its breathtaking baroque abbey church of the Asam brothers and the oldest abbey brewery in the world! Enjoy traditional Bavarian (but also international) cuisine and of course the tasty monastery beer either in the monastery’s own beer garden or in the cozy guest rooms! One of the numerous ships in service takes you back to Kelheim. Since we are going with the current this time, the journey only takes 20 minutes!

Marvel at one of the longest wooden bridges in Europe, which, at 193 meters, stretches over the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal with elegant ease.

Stop At: Tropfsteinhohle Schulerloch, Oberau 2, 93343 Essing, Bavaria Germany

OPTIONAL:

The beautiful stalactite cave Schulerloch can be reached after a 20-minute, sometimes quite steep ascent on foot. During the 30-minute tour you will experience special stalactite formations, a globally unique water basin and a unique light show in which you will encounter mammoths and Neanderthals. Admission prices: adults € 6.00 / children 4 to 15 years old € 4.50

Stop At: Hotel & Brauereigasthof Schneider, Altmühlgasse 10, 93343 Essing, Germany

Take a seat in the idyllic beer garden of the Brauereigasthof Schneider directly on the Altmühl. 6 different, naturally cloudy types of beer await you directly from the in-house family brewery. In addition, a fine snack or a tasty menu – lovingly prepared from local and seasonal products by the chef Johannes Schneider. But if you just want to have a coffee / tea and try some of the homemade cakes, you’ve come to the right place!

Stop At: Prunn Castle, Schlossprunn 1, 93339 Riedenburg, Bavaria Germany

Optional: Like the ideal image of a knight’s castle, Prunn Castle stands on an almost vertical Jura rock high above the Altmühl. The views from there of the surrounding landscape of the Altmühltal are absolutely impressive. During the 30-minute tour you will learn about the eventful history of the castle, which goes back to the beginning of the 13th century. In 1566 the so-called “Prunner Codex” was found here – the fourth oldest complete manuscript of the Nibelungenlied. Admission price: Adults € 6.00 / children up to and including 17 years free admission

Stop At: Limes Wachturm Hienheim, Neustadtl an der Donau 93333 Austria

After a few minutes’ drive we reach a reconstructed Roman watchtower. The 550-kilometer-long Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes began on the banks of the Danube at Hienheim, and you can easily see its course in the fields. With a small cable ferry we drive to the southern bank of the Danube without motor power and only driven by the current.

Stop At: Kastell Abusina am Limes, Abusinastr. 16, 93333 Neustadt an der Donau, Bavaria Germany

The Roman fort Eining (Latin: Abusina) was founded around 80 AD and was a Roman military camp whose crew was responsible for security and surveillance tasks on the Limes. It is part of the Rhaetian Limes, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the few completely exposed fortifications on this section of the border that have been reconstructed in their foundation walls.

Stop At: Kuchlbauerturm – Abensberg, 93326 Abensberg, Germany

The combination of wheat beer brewery and extravagant architecture by the world-famous architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser make a stop at the Kuchlbauer in Abensberg essential, even for non-beer lovers. Don’t just marvel at the 34-meter-high tower, in which, among other things, a collection of 4,200 wheat beer glasses is shown and the wheat beer garden extends at its feet. The “Kunsthaus Abensberg” with the famous “Leaning Tower” is also located on the brewery area – you will not be able to stop being amazed! Brewery tours are possible; from € 13.50 per adult
