“Sixteen Going On Seventeen” – this famous movie hit was sung by “Liesl” and “Rolf” in front of the Gazebo in the garden of the “Trapp Villa” (the interior shots were filmed in Hollywood). Today you can admire the Sound of Music Pavilion in the park of Hellbrunn Palace, where it was moved after the filming.

Frohnburg Castle was built in the 17th century and today houses part of the Mozarteum University.

SOM relevance: In the film it represents the front of Villa Trapp.

Leopoldskron castle is a former archbishop’s summer residence from the 18th century and is now used as a hotel.

SOM relevance: The building with its idyllic gardens and terraces on the Leopoldskroner Weiher represents the back of the Trapp-Villa.

Located in the south of the old town, on the historic Nonntaler main
street, is the more than 300 year-old Erhard church.

SOM relevance: Its Baroque façade and the neighboring house can be seen on a Sound of Music carriage ride.

Nonnberg Abbey was founded in 712 and is today the world’s oldest Christian convent with an uninterrupted tradition.

Outdoor shots can be seen at the beginning of the film.

By the end of 1920, the pedestrian bridge opened in 1903 was subject to a toll. Enjoy from the eastern shore one of the most beautiful views of the river Salzach, the old town and the fortress Hohensalzburg.

SOM relevance: Or do a little dance here, like Julie Andrews did in the movie Sound of Music!

Admire the monument to the most famous son of the city here: the Mozart monument with baroque buildings and alpine peaks in the background is one of the most popular photo opportunities in Salzburg.

Sound Of Music relevance: In the pedestrian zones of the old town of Salzburg, some outdoor shots were taken: at Residenzplatz with the “most beautiful baroque fountain north of the Alps” and at the cathedral square. From outside free of charge!

(optional):
The interior of the Salzburg Cathedral was not visible in the film, but you should not miss a look into the baroque church together with your guide!
Admission (2023): € 5.00 per adult

The Kapitelplatz offers great views of the fortress and the cathedral.
Thanks to the baroque “Kapitelschwemme”, once used as a water trough for horses, one feels transported to Italy!

Market stalls in the square offer souvenirs and some sweets.

SOM relevance: Julie Andrews can be seen here in one of the scenes.

(OPTIONAL –> if you have booked the 9.5 hour tour length please note: If you wish to visit this attraction, you may need to make time reductions at other attractions):
From the 11th century Hohensalzburg is one of the largest and best preserved fortresses in Europe. If Napoleon had not come, it might never have been conquered.

The entrance fee includes the ascent and descent with the funicular, a 30-minute audio guide and access to the spectacular Gothic prince rooms. Also spectacular is the view of the
city and mountains.

Prices (2024): € 18:00 per adult, children (6 – 14 years): € 6.80

If you look around the beautiful cemetery of the Archabbey of St. Peter (founded around 696), you will notice that the escape scene at the end of the movie was not filmed here (but in the 20th Century-Fox Studios in Hollywood).

SOM relevance: However, one of the cemetery chapels was used for an interior shot.

This venue was hewn directly into the Mönchsberg in the late 18th
century. It was used as an archiepiscopal summer riding school. With a capacity of 1,437 spectators, it is today one of the most important concert halls in Salzburg.

SOM relevance: The famous “Edelweiss-” song was shot here.

(optional and only by advance notification):
The visit of the interior is only possible as part of a 1-hour guided tour (usually only once a day).
Please contact us after your booking if you are interested in such a
tour (admission approx. € 10.00 per adult)

This place, named after the famous Salzburg conductor Herbert von Karajan (+1989), is home to another baroque horse-back, and offers great views of the festival houses, the Peterskirche and the fortress.
