The 13th-century Magdeburg Cathedral is the symbol of the city and the oldest completed Gothic cathedral in Germany. The church was built in the French Gothic style and its interior is still impressive today. It took 300 years to build and the architects learned by trial and error as they had no frame of reference for Gothic architecture. The temple is 120 metres long, has 100 metre high towers and rich artistic decoration. During World War II., Magdeburg Cathedral was severely damaged by bombing. Extensive reconstruction began in 1955 and was completed in 2006. In the same year, a new organ was built and ceremoniously reinstalled in its original place.
